    What about a simple light sensor fitted into the light fitting. The change in brightness that a sensor will see is likely to be quite significant between larger wattage standard bulbs. Or maybe a temperature sensor of some kind. Adam

    Ok so it could be as simple as a passive integrator then. The problem comes if the frequency of the injector timing changes, will this happen? Do you know the frequency of the injector square wave? Adam

    My first thought would be to use an opto isolator whose output is configured as a common collector this will provide a good deal of isolation to the rest of the circuit. How pure dose the triangle/sawtooth waveform have to be? Adam

    Could you have long wires which is picking up interference? Might be noise be coupled into the ground wire of the scope probe. Connect the scope ground clip to the probe tip and move it around close to the PCB, do you see anything? What power supply are you using and can you run from a battery...

I feel the same as Steve about the purpose of the reference, but it's not the way I would do it but hey we are all different, well that's what my missus keeps telling me...
