Back lit Chess Board, Led Question

I think you need an LED with a wide half angle say 85 degrees. They are not normally that bright because otherwise you might get spotting. This is where you can see the high brightness part of the LED. I think you want something that's going to defuse nicely over the coloured plastic your going...

Use Capacitive Sensing to detect a train?

Hello Yes it could be done with capacitor sensing, but have you also considered a magnet and reed switch or hall effect device. You could also look at metal detectors this could also work it if the train had large enough metal parts. Adam

Back lit Chess Board, Led Question

A couple of things first. 1. What LEDs are you going to use? 2. What power supply are you using? 3. How much power do you want the LEDs to use I.e how bright? 4. How many LEDs are you going to need, I noticed 3 LEDs in series in your drawing, is this the maximum? Adam

Fair point JB, didnt think of it like that. Adam

What would 'high-power' be considered? (Constant Current Source)

I agree with Bob constant current is the best option. Stay away from high voltage because moisture from outside can cause issues with circuitry that is not sealed. Adam

    AC power generation and transformers

The magnetic field is a fact of life, but the electricity company would want to reduce this as much as possible. Without power factor correction this is wasted energy so they would want to keep the inductance to a minimum. Adam

Capacitors in parallel effects on frequency

The resistor after the capacitor is what is causing the attenuation. Think of it as being a frequency sensitive voltage divider. In a high-pass filter you are not interested in DC because this is blocked by the capacitor apart from a small leakage current. The resistor the other side of the...

Binary 1-wire switch status (closed/open) sensor?

Could you use a one wire A to D for this? http://www.maximintegrated.com/en/products/comms/one-wire/DS2450.html Adam

I need to time an AC outlet by seconds, or a break in a DC line

Yes and people new to electronics don't suddenly become programmers over night, if at all.

Looking for compatible replacement FETs for a Automotive blower motor resistor

Thanks for the photo's. The only thing I can find is a MCR506 which is an SCR but no sure, similar case which might have been updated from the TO-220. Can't find anything on the other part. This is a real mystery, someone else might have another idea of what they are. I'll keep looking and let...

    Help with voltage follower

You could use an OP-amp with an NPN transistor on the output as a current amplifier. Choose a rail to rail opamp powered from the 12 Volt supply. The transistor should be rated for at least 1A if not 2A and you might need a small heat sink. You could look at using a Darlington transistor instead...

My Project motor driver Smoked what driver i really need ?

That looks like the Rover 5 Dagu 4 channel motor controller with encoder support if I am not mistaken . H-Bridge MOSFET rated at 4 Amps per channel. Were you using the current sense capability of the motor drive PCB when this happened? Adam

Help! Question about a pressure sensitive switch

If you just want to sense when something is removed, could you could use a micro switch with a springy lever you could use this to switch on the light also. Sandwich this between two plates with small springs in either corner. Just an Idea. Adam Picture of a lever micro switch.
