    Simulate a variable capacitor

Martin, I have to admit that I seem to miss a lot of memos at my age. This is definitely one of them. Do you have a link to some of those .022uF, .047uF variable caps? Chris

    LEDs Parallel or Series

Instead of manually throwing the switch (as seen in your video) you can include another timer that switches the flash pattern on a timed basis. Chris

    Simulate a variable capacitor

You didn't state the desired range of this cap but I don't think variable caps are practical at audio frequencies. It would demand a lot of real estate. I'm assuming the filter circuit you refer to is RC. Wouldn't it be more practical to make R variable? Chris

    Activate transistor with piezo disc

Uh yeah, I'm in the process of doing that right now. I hope he posts a schematic. Chris

Gee! Did I quote you but forgot? "The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks"! Chris

    Activate transistor with piezo disc

Actually, this requires a bit of clarification because when the Piezo is connected to the BE junction of the BJT the Piezo output will be heavily loaded. In other words the Piezo voltage will drop substantially. This however does not explain how the Piezo will light the LED directly but the...

    Transistor bias configuration

Well, I followed the link that Martin posted (I wish I hadn't) and found that I totally missed season 1 of this bloody thriller. What I found in that thread was reminiscent of another electronics forum that I left when I found EP, where members are typically friendly, helpful and above all, do...

    Transistor bias configuration

Reading some of these replies makes me want to pop some corn and crack open some beer. Then I'm going to sit back and enjoy the bloody carnage. Unfortunately the OP is going to be left more confused than when he posted the question. Chris

    Has utility power been restored?

Is your KWH meter new generation (Digital) that transmits the data to the utility? Chris

Total beginner... so I don't know if what I want to do is easy or hard!

With the Ohmmeter on the Rx1 range the start winding will indicate continuity briefly. When the probes are first connected the reading will be low but rapidly increase while the cap is charging until it reaches infinity for the Rx1 range. Shorting the start leads discharges the cap enabling...

Peckerhead?? Uh, ...you can't say that here unless you've been drinking! Wait ... never mind. Everyone here seems to do that! :p In fact it's an absolute miracle that we have such a large pool of intelligent grey matter, since the vast majority of us like to marinate our brain! Chris

Under load I believe it would be 1. My guess is that if it's unloaded it may keep running (3) do to residual magnetism in the field poles. Chris

    LEDs Parallel or Series

Just a suggestion but a dedicated (In-Line) fuse would keep your circuit independent of the OEM fuse block. This way an over current condition would not take out any OEM devices. On another point, I watched your video and thought wouldn't it be cool to automate that (flash pattern) toggle...

If it's a soft start then it's definitely not a cap start induction motor. It's probably a Universal motor as Minder suggests. Chris

That was my initial thought until I saw the photos of the controller associated with this motor. There's not much one can do with a 1PH induction motor besides the ability to reverse it on some models. So it begs the question what does the controller do? Chris
