    LED in oil should be ok. Mains line transformers are fully immersed in the stuff. Old motor starters used oil dip on the contacts. Seen 3 phase rectifier with perhaps 40-50 diodes immersed in a tank of it on an old induction heater. Water and electricity do not mix.

    For the 1hp motor quoted and the fact that it will be on full load continually and the fact that the motor can draw 4 times or more full load current at startup, then a contactor would be more suitable as explained earlier.

    Most I've seen can actually be anywhere between 12v or as much as 24v. Forget the AA. Actually forget the batteries. Some can take 2 amp for 5 metre string. Best to show just where you bought them if you cannot provide any specs. And as Hevans says, forget the do-dad.(resistor I think)

    Have in recent years been doing maintenance/repairs in aged care facilities. Noticed lately how many of the "recliner" style chairs are simply dumped instead of carrying out any repairs. Seems like parts suppliers charge an arm and a leg for genuine gear. Fairly certain some other mechanisms...
