    You will need to use the "diode test" on the meter. Reading depends on the meter as some are internally reversed. Test on a known diode like say a 1n4004 or similar to see polarity of your meter.

    Fan motors usually have the cap mounted remote from the motor i. e in the base or/ could be shaded pole motor. Either way it is frequency dependant which cannot be controlled the way you think.
