the symbols in the images there are ones that are often seen beside the DC input socket of the device or on the label of the power supply
what they are telling you is how the DC connector is polarised
--- and THIS is the point steve was desparately trying to impress upon you ---
The polarity can be different .... MOST of the time the centre is positive and the outer is negative. but some manufacturers like to be different and reverse that
it appeared that you were lucky that the DC plug on the power pack you decided to use as a replacement happened to be the same polarity as you monitor.
It could have easily been the reverse polarity and there would have been a puff of smoke from your monitor as it died

The socket where the round DC connector plugs in.
You know that thing which plugs into the wall and has a round connector on the other end. There's a big lump in the middle. It has writing on it. That;'s what I was talking about.

If neither of these have the polarity marked, you can test both adapters (if the original one has failed, you may have a problem)
Since you have it working already, you can verify if you can find any one of these has a polarity marked. If you can find this (or failing that, measure the voltage on the adapter) then you will have it for future reference should you need to replace the adapter again.
