While searching designs of LC oscillators for another thread here I stumbled upon this example of point to point wiring.

http://www.classeradio.com/vfo.htm

I would highly recommend that anyone that is wiring at this level of expertise (or lack of it) spend a whole lot time practicing. I consider this level of wiring to be acceptable for only the breadboard stage of development.

Edit: I'm referring to the third photo from top.

That's impressive.

I like the enclosure made of copper-clad boards soldered together. For some reason, I have never thought of doing it that way.

As advertised:
A 'simple' VFO. It probably doesn't get much 'simpler', than that.

That's a fine example of a rosin crystal demodulator circuit (cold solder joints).

that was awesome. I am thinking he applied the solder by cutting of a length, rolling it into a ball then jamming the components into the solder. so now I know how to solder without the iron
makes my soldering look like I am a seasoned veteran at it.

I did some "public soldering" a week or so ago.

The guy running the show said my soldering iron looked like a shovel.

Hey, it was my crappy iron, but a SHOVEL!?!

Back when Heathkit was at its pinical I had a young friend that landed his first position as a repair tech at one of the few stores that Heathkit had scattered around the US. I stopped by one day and got a look at what being a Heathkit repair tech was like. I expected that the majority of the repairs would entail misread - misplaced component values and such but I was only partly correct. I damn near went into cardiac arrest when I saw some of the soldering! How do you troubleshoot when all the joints look cold or bridged by slag? Melted insulation and burn scars were also typical. I didn't envy my young friend at all!

Wow. cold joints indeed. I always fret that my piece being soldered will absorb too much heat and risk being damaged, maybe nobody told this guy about soldering heat sinks! Apparently, they also failed to mention perf board, layout, etc. He is one ahead of me though, he has an oscilloscope :p

I think the technical term for this type of shoddy construction is called 'Dead Bug' assembly.
(Consider a dead bug on it's back with the legs up!)
