Merry Christmas everyone (again)!

It's midday on the 25th here. I'm with my partner Donna today. We're going to have Christmas dinner tonight at the house of her older daughter, who will soon be marrying her partner of many years, who is a truly excellent guy. They already have a little girl and their own house!

I can smell roast meat from the neighbours' houses already! It's been very hot here lately (southern hemisphere summer), but today is overcast so that's a welcome relief.

I've been interested in electronics since a young age. My father was a hi-fi guy - old valve amplifiers, classical music, that sort of thing - so he knew a bit about electronics, and we worked on his gear together! I taught myself from magazines like Everyday Electronics (English) and ETI (Australian), mostly.

I got an apprenticeship with a consumer electronics repair company, where I got my only formal training - in repairing TV sets, mainly :-( Then a friend of mine got me into a job doing embedded systems development - firmware initially, then hardware when the previous hardware guy left. I learnt a lot from online magazines, application notes, and experimentation. It was a small company, so I did the whole hardware development thing, from circuit design and PCB layout through to workshop test procedures and jigs. It was a great job.

I left in 2009 after some medical problems and I haven't had a full-time job since, but let's not dwell on that :) I get a lot of enjoyment from Electronics Point - some threads more than others... It's a great opportunity to share my experience, such that it is, and to learn about new stuff as well.

When I'm more financial, I hope to get into some modern pre-rolled products like Raspberry Pi, and maybe get into some FPGA stuff. We considered the Altera NIOS embedded processor at my job and I liked it. There are so many opportunities around nowadays for making cool things, and I also want to be able to answer questions on those subjects.

I hope everyone has a great time this festive season, catching up with family, getting drunk if that's your thing, or not if it isn't, and just generally relaxing and enjoying the company :) And not spending too much time on the computer... Donna's orders!

May your soul rest in piece dear friend. May your memory live for ever and ever !!!
