Hello all, newbie here. I have a set of Creative 5700 digital speakers that have been experiencing problems with sound cutting out. It is a problem that is known to afflict this model with the digital inputs. Upon opening the control box / decoder / amp for investigation I came across what looks like some kind of component failure on one of the boards. You can see it in the pictures. The brown stuff seems like a rubbery epoxy type substance that appears to have come from the component labeled C5.000G0J. I would like to try to replace it but do not seem to be getting anywhere finding out what it is, based on those numbers. Any help would be invaluable and much appreciated. If needed can provide much higher res images. Many thanks.

hi there
welcome to the forums :)

the brown stuff is just glue primarily there to stop the connector from falling out/ off the board its giving mechanical strength----- dont remove the brown glue
the C5.000 is a 5MHz crystal for provinding a clock signal to that large processing chip. the crystal looks ok no signs of damage

Many thanks davenn! I am still a little anxious as none of the other similar connectors on the board(s) seem to have the same stuff on them ... and there are a few of them. I shall continue to troubleshoot today and let you know if I find anything else that looks suspicious. I had seen that kind of brown stuff before on some failed capacitors, that's why I thought it might have failed.

dont worry about it ... you are worrying unnecessarily

I know what crystals are and I know what is inside them, and one of the things that isnt, is brown glue!! :)

can u put a pic up of the whole circuit if u have one please?

I don't have a picture of the whole circuit (kicking myself or not taking more pictures of the whole board when I had the cover off). This is what it looks like with the cover on. The cover is soldered at four points underneath and is screwed into one of the amp heatskinks on a separate board (earth?) via the green wire. Perhaps you may be able to track down a datasheet for the board.

Many thanks once again! I did take a chance and replace it anyway. No change the first time I switched them on. Took them apart and reassembled then they seem to have stabilised so I am suspecting some dry joints which may have been sorted out during the unsoldering / resoldering of the cover? You can see pictures in my other reply of the cover (which I am thinking provides earth via green wire) but otherwise still feel clueless although much happier since they seem to be behaving. I run them through the week and will update if anything changes.
