Greenland has mountains that are over 3000 meters high, a 6 meter rise

Iceland is to the south of the Arctic circle so the periods of
darkness are not so prolonged and the effects of darkness (SAD) do not
seem to be as marked in Iceland as elsewhere at those latitudes
according to scientific studies.
Iceland has one of the highest standards of living in the world and is
quite possibly the best place in the world to live in.

productive for society in general as if those same tradesmen were paid
to dig holes and then paid to fill them up. The result is a few people
living in a 28,000 square foot energy-guzzling house. Those same
tradesmen, for the same effort, could have built 20 decent houses for
real people.

Just paying people merely redistributes wealth; it doesn't increase
wealth.

Brazil does have a big slave labor problem. It is mostly in the more
remote ranches. People are lured in by the promice of a good well paying
job, but end up being held captive and threatened. Their government has
been trying to stop it with mixed results.

But how much of their gear is designed there?

I find it interesting, and incidentally profitable, that I have very
few non-US competitors. Anybody with access to UPS can design, build,
and sell instrumentation at outrageous margins. So there must be
cultural reasons why so many countries have few if any small companies
that do so.

value of everything else I already know. The effect is upward
exponential. Sometimes something you studied decades ago collides with
a problem today, producing revelation.

Digging the hole and filling it up produces nothing of value. Building a house
however does provide an increase in value.
