mankind. I suspect that even the amount of money Bill Gates has would
just be lost in the noise unless the spending was targeted on something
useful like giving everyone in the US a PC with Linux on it. If you
spread it among the poor they would only waste it on food and housing.

the payments. And Bill's money would be diverted from investment into
consumption, which may have longterm damaging effects for the economy.
Rich people, by having more than they can spend, divert consumption
into investment.

If you sent it to a country that is truly poor, those people would be
better off, at least for a while, at some cost to Americans. That
might not be a bad idea, at least if the benefits were longterm.
