Solenoids

Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question but do solenoids run off batteries or motors (for my project it is only a small solenoid of 5V)

The solenoid is operated by an electric current supplied to a wire coil, which then creates a magnetic field usually around a core. The magnetic field moves that core in a direction needed to operate the device. So the answer to YOUR question is that it would run off of the batteries you have in your project.
