Speed controller on washing machine motor

Unfortunately, that’ll be more or less exactly what you already have. A triac controlled dimmer.

That’s a good question.
I don’t know what specific motor you have or its specifications but a cheap controller with over rated specifications won’t do it.
Start up current and stall current have to be taken into account.
Can you measure this with your motor?.

I really appreciate your feedback. Here are pics of the motors and stats. I was thinking, surely a 'so-called' 4000 W speed controller should be able to handle that?!

If the motor has brushes and you want adjustable speed, a controller designed for universal motors with a tachometer feedback would be the better route. I’d first confirm the exact motor type and its voltage/current rating before connecting a 4000 W controller, since not every washing machine motor will work properly with it.

Thanks ethancr. I abandoned my plans and hope to purchase something later suitable for polishing minerals.
