    What is this?

I have a "surge" protector it's simply an inductor in a plastic box, paid good money for the power block too! I wonder if i could use these along with MOVs to protect the low side from surges

mains rectified voltage for christmas lights

400v electrolytic capacitor, 3rd year running.. the leds are 5mm self changing leds, they are NOT being stepped down by an areay of leds .. They do work, however how reliable is another question !... 3rd year running though from mains 240vac And yes i have non polarized caps in my stock thank...

mains rectified voltage for christmas lights

Normally yes... i'll go abd grab the star from the tree and show you.

mains rectified voltage for christmas lights

If that was true, chinese Christmas lights would be small bombs, but they work, i was surprised as well since safety film caps are used

Generating DC signal proportional to the peak of a pulse

A peak detector - a simple example, the capacitor will charge/discharge to the voltage you're sampling. .

mains rectified voltage for christmas lights

Polarized or not, it should not matter for 40vac not that i would but for 3 years now i've got a chinese star light for the tree which uses an electrolytic! lol

Found it too funny to not share here!

mains rectified voltage for christmas lights

Only used a zener because the Sim has no 7812 :p I added an inseries resistor to limit the current as well, 1ohm could be swapped for a 10 or higher

    Current control and defence

That is a dodgy circuit lol

    Current control and defence

Popular circuit? Why a thyristor is my question, is this not an ac circuit, so why use one Question, 9v out?

More woes driving LEDs via PWM

Yup what steve said, fets need a pull down or they float... Arduino's better for this than a pi

    Projection TV Issue

Is it the same identical issue? If yes then something else where is putting strain on it maybe, a failed component they may have missed.. Projection TVs are not worth the repair cost as they're big and bulky

mains rectified voltage for christmas lights

OK - i just designed this simple circuit.. 24ac to 12vac Replace the zener for a 12v linear regulator, the same way a cap is used to drop 240vac can drop 24ac to 12v using a 100uf electrolytic cap (50v rated to be safe) Out pops 15v ish which can be regulated

mains rectified voltage for christmas lights

Using a capacitor to drop directly from mains can be used on a low AC voltage too! So why not use a capacitor 24ac to get it down to closer to 12v and then a zener to regulate it (low current)

Step Down DC Buck Capacitor Blow up

Yes, i once had an lm2596 self destruct over a 16v input lol, the reg exploded, nothing else though as it wad just 16v input/16v out And several regs that just fed out what came in, but these issues seem more common with a step up dc dc converters

Step Down DC Buck Capacitor Blow up

I've had a couple of defective step down converters The cap that exploded would be in the low side, but instead of switching like it supposed to, it dumped the load to the output, thus the caps exploding.. Faulty unit.

    Cons of using large transistors?

2 people mentioned it here but incase you missed it 1. Larger transistors have a lower gain, eg hfe of 100 vs a small transistor npn might have say a 300 gain In otherwords, if 1ma is allowed to flow via the base, the collector / emitter a smaller transistor would allow 300ma but a bigger...

(FAST) Finding the right power supply for an old boombox

I'll bet it does not pull 23w at 12v 23/12 = 2amp supply in which i bet it puls 1 to 1.5amps, just turn the volume down and slowly crank it up while getting a multimeter to measure the current draw... But it is sony maybe it will touch around 18w

Want to increase brightness of LED headlight

If the other models are similar to the qx5252f, you can feed up to (i think) 4 or 5v, i'm actually feeding 2nimh batteries in series supplying it to the qx5252f Why? Because i then perfboarded a circuit with a 3-5uf home wound torroid which results in a 300ma output, but it was pulling...
