    I suspect it may be 3ph brushless (BLDC) as used now on motorized bikes etc. If the rear end is vented, you may be able to spot if it does indeed have brushes or not..

    So 12v it will be DC, but it could be brushed motor or BLDC, either can possibly be controlled using PWM. But you will lose some power with the PWM reduction so it all depends on load.

    The modern automotive wasted spark version I used worked like a charm, the nice thing using a micro, you can tailor the spark sequence how you wish. I just used one of the outputs for GND. 12v DC used to operate it.

    I have not measured the value generated, but it can draw a arc over 1/4" ! The deer do not appreciate it also. I just use single galvanized wire with one length buried in the soil for some length for ground.

    I built one last year as a deer deterrent around the veg garden using a waste spark automotive ignition coil. Just the supply and a 8 pin Picmicro & Mosfet. produces two shots in quick succession every second.

    I don't see why they would require that the DIR signal is pulsed, if you are moving in a specific direction it can remain HI or LOW, at least on the systems I have implemented they can do this. Stepper motors can handle constant rated current, with the correct drive that maintains the plate...

    I have never used those products, but typically you do not require to issue a pulse stream for the DIR, only the step pulse rate.

    Do you mean G-Code as in CNC? I don't use Raspberry Pi but I assume it can keep track of the number of pulses it issues? No feedback device needed with steppers!

    What is the nature of the motor control, If any? ,or is it power ON/OFF? Motor current is very high at turn on, if not controlled.
