Fried PSU for 12v cb radio base station conversion

Clearly there is a cracked diode. But what does your fault finding say?. Is the output transistor shorted? Is the diode shorted?. It’s a pretty simple power supply so you should get it working again. Edit: is this a typical 13.8V linear supply?.

Ethics of buying electronic modules from Chinese sites?

Absolutely. Low voltage DC. However, Louis Rossman did a test of car blade fuses from Amazons top sellers. The 2A fuses finally triggered (blew) at nearly 10A!. Some didn’t at all. They were only thick metal direct to each blade. Now that is very concerning.

Ethics of buying electronic modules from Chinese sites?

I believe Maplin went out of business because they were selling the same items that you can buy direct via eBay for a fraction of the price. 1 LED used to be £1.25 in Maplin. 500 LEDs from China a couple of quid. A cheap dash cam from Maplin, £69.99. Exactly the same item from China, £6.50...

    revolving platform

Yes, exactly. The reason for more ‘channels’ (circuits), is to have different signals, data or voltages for any number of reasons. A second motor on the moving platform or a device that requires 5V and not 12v for example. When you think of slip rings, imagine a ribbon cable that doesn’t...

    Tantalum capacitors

Is it a bead type or SMD type? A,B, C, D etc seem to be size related. There are flame retardant ceramic equivalents but using the same type at a higher voltage may be better. 4.7uF 25V for example.
