    Making bad audio better

Many buy their sound systems strictly by the wattage claimed by the manufacture. As far as I know, there's no standard for these ratings. Company "A" can claim 100w per channel by measuring peak current through a 8Ω resistor connected at the output. They don't care about distortion levels, nor...

    Making bad audio better

The most important part of an audio system is your ears. As you age you'll cumulatively loose your hearing starting with the higher frequencies. Alas I'm in my 50's now, so I might as well sell my fancy McIntosh system with Martin Logan electrostatic speakers. If your a young-buck, it's worth...

    Making bad audio better

Exactly. A sound system is as good as its weakest link. In other words, don't but a great tuner, a cheap preamp, a great amp, and great speakers because it will only sound as good as the cheap preamp. You might as well but all cheap components.

    Making bad audio better

Around here everyone swears that you must use Monster brand cables for good audio. There may be better shielding in some brands but I believe the main thing is the gauge wire or circular mils you are using. Advertising has scammed lots of people into buying their products.

    Making bad audio better

Lol, no oxygen free hype here, but many people will use a spool of speaker wire that is quite small (22awg) and run it 50ft or more (15m) and wonder why it sounds like crap. Change it to 14 or 16awg and the difference is astounding.

    Making bad audio better

There is a world of info out there on this subject that I couldn't come close to explaining properly, but if I had to put it briefly I'd put it this way: An amplifier may have high wattage and be capable of producing loud sounds but it may not be capable of responding quickly enough to accurately...

    Start Run Motor Capacitor

I agree with you that it's too small. There isn't and real danger of installing it, other than it'll probably just burn out prematurely. I try to be within 10% of start caps value. It is wise to monitor start and run current. Your problem may be the compressor and not your motor.

    Oscilloscope? ?

Sometimes you can find an old oscilloscope at a rummage sale or on E-bay for around 50 bucks (40 quid?). An inexpensive model is fun to learn and experiment on, but I wouldn't advise a beginner to spend big money on a high quality scope.

Trumps solar wall, forget politics we should just build the thing

..Also from the US, I'd say it's more accurate to say; our rights are all the same regardless of race or religion etc. But, if you are a person of means you definitely can afford to get better legal council and end up in a better position if charges are made against you. Btw, I see Bob's flag.

Trumps solar wall, forget politics we should just build the thing

They may not give a rats ass about a take over but securing our borders is still vital. Fruit pickers are not illegal, they are migrant workers who come and go seasonally. I have no problem with any immigrant doing so legally. But, turning a blind eye to who's illegally spilling over a countries...

Trumps solar wall, forget politics we should just build the thing

I agree, but those things are to the mutual benefit of all citizens. You said a governments role is "transfer of wealth" which implies taking wealth from one in order to give to another.

Trumps solar wall, forget politics we should just build the thing

I disagree. Government's only legitimate role is to protect individual rights to life, liberty and property. Government has no right taking from one person and giving it to another in order to create jobs. The burden is merely shifted and there is no economic gain. The government shouldn't...

Trumps solar wall, forget politics we should just build the thing

A wall would help but at what cost? I believe the focus need to be on employers that illegally hire people. It's easy enough to verify the books, but as long as employers are willing to pay people cash under the table, illegals will come and seek out these jobs. Electronic transactions may be...

Caustic Corrosion on Water Level Sensor

I like the AC idea but you won't totally eliminate corrosion. Original post said stainless steel, but in the picture looks like brass electrodes. I would cover the electrode with insulation except for the very end. That way all you have to do is clean the tip instead of the entire electrode...

Non-problem? Illegals leaving the US is also a big problem because many are smuggling guns and money back to strengthen the drug cartels. Yes, the cost to secure 1,200 miles of our southern border is high but it also vital to our national security. It should be noted that Mexico is only a...

I'm all for securing our borders but building a wall is probably not be the best solution. I believe drone technology is more feasible, at least for monitoring vast areas.

    Need Help With An Idea

They already make them. I don't know the model number but I use a hand held fluke lan analizer that has eight dummy loads (labeled 1 through 8) that you plug into jacks you want to identify. Then at the patch panel or wherever the other end of the run is, you plug in the analizer and it will...

    Boost AC circuit

Sounds pretty close to me. About 2 to 4k for materials and labor, and about 3 to 6k for trenching. Conditions can vary widely. Could be sandy soil that a ditch-witch can run through in about an hour, or it could be rocky soil with tree roots and other obstacles requiring hand digging. If it...
