    If you're talking about a converter that converts analog to digital it should work provided the tuner (in the recorder) is digital. The build in digital tuner of the tv is probably not being used during recording or playback from an auxiliary input.

    Yes, it's very likely a phantom voltage. A dvm reading can be misleading. Yes, there is actually 230v there, but the circuit is unable to pass any significant current when under a load. In situations like this I always use a loaded meter.

    I fixed a Milwaukee drill switch one time by taking it apart and bending the tabs that grip the wire so it was more springy thus making better contact. I don't know if this is an option for you. My Milwaukee drill motor is still working 10 years after my cheapskate fix.

    Solar will likely be a contender. Technology is still improving and costs are continuing to fall. Elon Musks solar roofs are pretty cool but where the money will go 5 years out is anybody's guess.

    If you have a bad ballast on an obsolete type lamp (mercury vapor) the best thing to do is replace the entire fixture. Why go out of your way to fix an outdated fixture that is so bad for the environment? I recommend high pressure sodium or metal halide.

    Commonly referred to as a ballast. On a side note: Please make sure you recycle these mv lamps. They contain loads of mercury and are now obsolete because of environmental reasons.

    If you look at a data sheet for the tubes you are trying to replace it will tell you specific requirements of how they operate. Similarly for transistors they have data sheet telling you their specs. Trying to get a transistor (or circuitry) to match the tube specs sounds like a daunting...

    It sounds like it could get complicated trying to match the characteristics of the tubes let alone make it more efficient using existing components. Cool idea, but I don't know if it's feasible.
