Any bulging caps or leakage? Martin

    Denon DRA-545RD

Yes, the capacitors would definitely be a culprit. Have you opened the unit for a visual inspection?. Martin

Charge a battery with electromagnetic induction

I absolutely agree with bluejets. Would have been even better four years ago!

PSU Silverstone ET550-G dead after thunderstorm (turned itself off)

Hello Hans, There are many things that can be checked. First would be the fuse. Do you own or have access to a simple multimeter?. They can be bought for as little as £10. Or a diy continuity tester, a piece of wire, torch bulb and battery. Where the switch is, simply connect across your...

Wanted: Wanted - copy of ETI magazine “Project Electronics”

Hi, is it specifically the magazine you want or electronic projects?. If the latter, Colin Mitchell’s ‘Talking Electronics’ web site has hundreds of projects. Incidentally he is in Oz too. He may even be able to help with the magazine you want. Martin

    Thermistor question

I have no idea what controller it is or what it does for that matter. But IF it SHOULD read 77f and it DOESN'T, then there is clearly a problem with the controller side. Why not tell us all the info of the controller so that someone here, who has time to read up on it can help you. Martin

    Thermistor question

No, at 77 degrees F the thermistor will /should read 10K ohms. According to the the 10K-2 Thermistor output table, at 77 degrees F or 25 degrees C should see 10K ohms. But if the Thermistors are NOT at 77 degrees, obviously the reading will differ. Placing a 10K resistor across the thermistor...

RIFA PME 271M - there are so many!

Hi Richard, please think about what @Bluejets said too. It is very valid. ie- if that cap was shorted, the motor wouldn’t work at all. So an unfamiliar smell and motor loading could be armature failure causing plastic surroundings to overheat. Lets hope the smell was cap plastic melting!. Martin

RIFA PME 271M - there are so many!

That one you ordered is perfect. It doesn’t matter which way it is connected. It is not a polarized capacitor. Martin

RIFA PME 271M - there are so many!

Hi there, An X2 cap is invariably placed across the AC before other components. It’s a safety cap and filter. You can remove this and see if the problem goes away. It normally fails as a short and blows the fuse (not always). Have you checked across it for a short?. Martin

Car Amp in Need of Repair

The photo was courtesy of Google images!. Tinternet is a wonderful thing. Yes they are identical and probably in series. I would replace both as the ‘good one’ is probably ‘stressed’. Take note of polarity. Signal droppping in and out as you describe should still be checked for solder joints...

    Header pins

As @Harald Kapp has pointed out, header pins are just ‘header pins’. You can get m/f, m/m, f/f etc and cut whatever not needed off. Or just purchase dupont ext wires with male or female ends. Do a web search for ‘header pins’. Click images and select the type you require. Martin

Car Amp in Need of Repair

If you get a drumstick or wooden chopstick, you could put pressure on the relays and the toroids to start with while the unit is powered. Press down on the sister boards and gently put side pressure on the larger components. This MIGHT point out where dry/cracked joints are. Typically in the...

Car Amp in Need of Repair

Ahh, that makes it a lot clearer. Then yes, crack it open. You’ll need to be able to see both sides of the board. Be careful though, there are likely to be banks of capacitors for each channel that can hold a large voltage. Check very closely for cracked solder joints, loose components and...

Car Amp in Need of Repair

As mentioned above, an intermittent or random cutting in or out would suggest a bad connection somewhere. A common car audio problem is third party wiring into front door panels. The door speaker wiring is often a lighter gauge or not routed correctly. This causes stress and breakage of the...
