Kevin Weddle
What is the construction of a light bulb dimmer?
audioguru
Hi Kevin, welcome back. ;DThe 120V AC light bulb dimmer circuit in our projects section might work, but nowadays, a Diac is used instead of its neon light bulb for triggering the Triac.http://www.electronics-lab.com/projects/motor_light/029/

trigger
some low cost dimmer will use SCR + diac circuit...
Guest Alun
SCR dimmers aren't used in practice because an SCR onle passes half the AC cycle so them maximum power available is 50%. We studied only an SCR dimmer in college because it's easier to understand and veiw the waveform on a scope.A neon lamp and diac are electrically the same thing, the reach a certain breakdown voltage and then turn on, this is needed to make the triggering of the traic more reliable. audioguru
I don't know if our project was designed with a neon bulb instead of a Diac because either a neon bulb was on hand, or because the Diac wasn't invented yet. ;D
