"Tesla Motors Inc. will build a 250 million dollar plant in California's
Silicon Valley to produce its new battery-powered sedan, the company
said Wednesday.
Construction of the plant, about 20 minutes from Tesla's headquarters in
San Carlos, California, is set to begin in mid-2009, with the first
sedans expected to be ready in late 2010.
Company leaders expect the initiative to help the company. "The company
has clearly taken production of all-electric vehicles to the next level,
and the Model S assembly plant will dramatically accelerate our growth,"
Tesla chairman Elon Musk said in a statement.
The "Model S" car is a five-passenger sedan run by a lithium-ion battery
pack that is expected to power the car for about 240 miles (385
kilometers) per charge. The car has an estimated price of 60,000 dollars. "

What's this in miles per dollar? (the batteries have to be charged, and
you have to get the electricity from somewhere!)

Thanks,
Rich

LiFeP - 2000+ cycles before capacity falls below 80%

Assuming those numbers are reasonable (about 4x the usual number for
secondary cells) that's still only three years, two charges a day
(commuting). $10K replacement? No thanks.

You only need a couple of sq m for solar thermal, not an entire roof.

In your flat/apartment surrounded by everyone else's heating, I'm sure that's
true. ;~)

Small wheels, vibration.

Do you know how flat the batteries get at the end of a milk round of barely what 10
km ?

No idea, but I can make the prediction that when produced in the same
quantities as IC engines of comparable power electric motors will be
cheaper.

OK, you can I think get electric and ICE chainsaws. I wonder how they compare for cost and reliability.

$60,000 ?

Not exactly a family run-around is it ?

And don't forget to factor in the battery replacement cost every however many
years.

As I've mentioned before, you don't buy new engines, you buy quality rebuilt ones. It's cheap. I've rebuilt 2 myself.

Even with a short commute and 1 recharge a day it would probably make the car unsaleable after the battery life was up. Who's going to buy a 6
y.o. used car with a potential $10,000 bill hanging around their neck ?

PHEVs have it. For now.

I tell a lie - make that 7000 cycles
