I started from the original design and modified that a bit. Indeed: Q1 is really essential and can not be eliminated; the higher the negative supply rail is (=less neg voltage), the lower that resistor to the base must be.
If I want to get high-voltage op-amps I have to order them from the US or Europe; UPS or DHL package post from there is US$30. I am too frugal for such expense, so TL081 it is for me.
