Traco Power Releases Compact, 1-Inch by 1-Inch 40 W DC/DC Converter Series
With a focus on cost-efficiency, Traco Power has added the THL 40WI series of compact 40 W DC/DC converters to its power conversion portfolio.
In the realm of power electronics, the continuous push for higher power density and robust performance in a compact footprint remains a constant challenge. Traco Power’s new THL 40WI series addresses this challenge with the introduction of 40 W DC/DC converters housed in a 1-inch x 1-inch x 0.43-inch metal package. This form factor is designed for applications where board space is at a premium, without compromising on performance or reliability.

40 W DC/DC Converters
At the core of the THL 40WI 40 W DC/DC converter is its ability to operate across a wide 4:1 input voltage range. Two primary input configurations are available: 9 – 36 VDC and 18 – 75 VDC. This flexibility makes the series adaptable to a variety of bus voltages commonly found in industrial and mobile equipment, as well as distributed power architectures.
The converters are rated for high efficiency, with a maximum of 93%. This figure is critical for minimizing heat dissipation, which in turn simplifies thermal management and contributes to system reliability.
A notable feature of the THL 40WI converters is the extended operating temperature range, spanning from – 40 °C to 65 °C without derating. This is a crucial specification for engineers designing systems for harsh environments or those with limited airflow. For applications requiring operation beyond this range, an optional heatsink is available to extend the thermal capabilities.

Functionality and Protection
The THL 40WI series integrates several control and protection features to enhance its utility and safeguard downstream components. The converters include an I/O-isolation of 1500 VDC, which is a standard requirement for many industrial and medical applications to ensure safety and prevent ground loops.
In terms of control, the series provides a remote On/Off function, which allows for external control of the power supply without physically interrupting the input voltage. This is useful for sequencing power-up and power-down cycles in complex systems. A trim function is also integrated, providing a method to fine-tune the output voltage to meet specific load requirements.
For protection, the converters are equipped with safeguards against overload, overvoltage, and short circuits. These protections are essential for preventing damage to the converter itself and the components it powers, particularly during fault conditions.

Cost-Efficient Power Conversion
The THL 40WI converters are positioned for a range of applications, including mobile equipment, instrumentation, communication systems, and general industrial electronics. The series meets the latest IT safety certifications (UL 62368-1), which streamlines the process for engineers working on projects that require compliance with international safety standards.
The combination of its compact size, wide input voltage range, and robust thermal performance makes the THL 40WI 40 W DC/DC converters a relevant component for engineers seeking to design cost-efficient yet high-quality power solutions.
