ROHM has introduced the industry’s smallest terahertz (THz) wave oscillation and detection devices, leveraging Resonant Tunneling Diode (RTDs) to advance terahertz wave applications and pave the way for ultra-fast communication technologies. These devices offer a promising alternative to conventional wireless transmission and enable high-resolution radar sensing.

The RTD chip, measuring just 0.5mm × 0.5mm, operates at a typical frequency of 320GHz and delivers an output power of 10–20µW. Mounted in a compact PLCC package (4.0mm × 4.3mm) commonly used for LEDs, this innovation is over a thousand times smaller than conventional oscillators. Its ultra-compact design supports terahertz wave applications, even in space-constrained environments.

Terahertz waves hold significant potential for applications such as nondestructive testing, imaging, and sensing in the medical and healthcare sectors. When the antenna surfaces of the oscillation and detection devices are positioned 10mm apart, they achieve a typical dynamic range of 40 dB. These devices operate at room temperature, consuming just 10mW of power, eliminating the need for cooling equipment required by some conventional methods. Their compact, energy-efficient design ensures high reliability and adaptability across various operating environments.

Occupying the frequency range between radio waves and light, terahertz waves exhibit unique characteristics, including excellent permeability similar to radio waves, straight-line propagation like laser beams, and selective absorption properties for materials such as polymers. However, commercializing terahertz technologies has traditionally been hindered by the need for large-scale equipment and high development costs. These advancements aim to overcome those challenges, paving the way for broader adoption.

ROHM now offers samples of its terahertz wave oscillation and detection devices at a sample price of $990.00 per unit (excluding tax), less than one-tenth the cost of conventional devices. To demonstrate its commitment to advancing terahertz wave research and application development, ROHM also provides comprehensive support materials and evaluation kits. These kits include the devices and evaluation boards, simplifying testing and integration for developers.
