Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) officially announced a new family of digital multiphase controllers aimed at supplying Vcore power to Intel’s next-generation Panther Lake and Wildcat Lake mobile processors. The three controllers – AOZ71049QI, AOZ71149QI and AOZ71146QI – are optimized to meet the Intel IMVP9.3 power delivery specification and draw as little as 5.9 mA of quiescent current at PS0 in a 3+2+1+1 configuration. The controllers are four-rail devices, capable of handling Core, Graphics, Auxiliary and LPCORE voltage domains from a single chip. The devices accept input voltage from 2.5 V to 24 V and regulate output from 0 V to 1.95 V. AOS claims that the low quiescent draw can extend notebook battery life by 30 to 60 minutes over that of competing solutions.

The AOZ71049QI series is based on proprietary AOS Advanced Transient Modulation (A2TM. This technology is a combination of variable-frequency hysteretic peak-current mode control and advanced phase-current sensing that effectively bridges the gap between digital flexibility and analog efficiency. It is equipped with 4 output rails by default (up to 4+2+1+2) and supports 5 separate SVID domains: 4 phases for core voltage domain (IA) 2 phases for graphics voltage domain (GT) 1 phase for Auxiliary domain (SA) 2 phase for LPCORE rail domain The PSYS domain’s reporting functions are integrated into a single SVID interface.

AOZ71146QI is a high performance digital and analog hybrid multiphase buck controller designed for Intel IMVP8/9/9.1/9.2/9.3 platform specifications. It features 4 output rails (2+2+1+1 optimum) and supports 5 separate SVID domains: Consolidates up to 2-phase for the standard core voltage domain (IA), 1 phase for graphics voltage domain (GT), 2 phase for Auxiliary domain (SA) and 1 phase for LPCORE rail domain and reporting functions for PSYS domain into single SVID interface. AOS has a new offering, the AOS Advanced Transient Modulator (A2TM). It employs modern modulated frequency hysteretic peak current mode regulation with proprietary phase current sensing scheme for fast rapid response and minimal system operating cost.

- Designed for energy-efficient operation with an exceptionally low 5.9mA quiescent current in a 3+2+1+1 phase configuration at PS0.
- Features intelligent power-saving technologies such as autonomous phase shedding and automatic discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to reduce power losses across varying workloads.
- Compatible with a wide range of industry-standard DrMOS modules as well as discrete driver and MOSFET power-stage solutions from multiple vendors.
- Integrated acoustic optimization mechanisms help minimize coil whine and maintain quiet system operation under dynamic load conditions.
AOZ52986QI Smart Power Stage (SPS) Features:
- Operates from a broad 2.7V to 22V input supply range and incorporates a robust 30V high-side MOSFET for improved reliability and voltage tolerance.
- Delivers up to 45A of continuous current with support for peak currents reaching 80A, making it suitable for demanding computing platforms.
- Includes built-in telemetry with 3.5% current-sensing accuracy and 2% temperature-monitoring accuracy for enhanced system management and protection.
- Supports switching frequencies of up to 1.5MHz, allowing designers to reduce the size of external inductors and capacitors for more compact power solutions.
The AOZ71049QI and AOZ71149QI are both capable of supporting up to 4+2+1+2 phase configurations, with the AOZ71049QI housed in a 6 mm x 6 mm QFN package optimized for AOS’s own SPS devices, while the AOZ71149QI in a larger 7 mm x 7 mm package supports both industry-standard DrMOS and SPS power stages. The AOZ71146QI is a lower phase count version supporting 2+1+2+1 up to 6 mm x 6 mm package with an even lower quiescent current of 5.4 mA, targeting thinner, lower power notebook designs. All these parts have provision for discrete inductor as well as two-phase coupled inductor. All of them have a fast V-Mode that facilitates quick transitions of voltage when there is a change in the power state. The protection features include undervoltage, overvoltage, overcurrent, and over-temperature warning through SMBALERT, while way-over-current detection is available in the AOZ71049QI.
AOZ71049QI, AOZ71146QI, and AOZ71149QI are all available in production quantities with a lead time of 12-16 weeks. The per-unit price of AOZ71049QI is $2.7; that of AOZ71146QI is $2.66; and that of AOZ71149QI is $2.75. Refer to the news section for additional information.
