Bourns Expands Shielded Power Inductor Line for Automotive DC-DC Designs
New AEC-Q200 series pairs metal-alloy cores with shielding to curb EMI while handling saturation currents up to 9 A.
Bourns has introduced three new shielded power inductor series—the SRP2010PA, SRP2510PA, and SRP2512PA—aimed at automotive DC-DC converter applications that demand high current handling in tight board space. The AEC-Q200-compliant components combine a metal-alloy powder core with shielded construction, an approach intended to limit magnetic field radiation without requiring engineers to sacrifice the low-profile footprints that dense automotive PCBs increasingly require.
Addressing Current, Space, and EMI Simultaneously
Modern automotive electronics routinely ask designers to reconcile three competing constraints: rising current demands, shrinking board real estate, and stricter EMI limits. Unshielded inductors can simplify manufacturing but tend to radiate more magnetic flux, complicating layout near sensitive circuitry. Bourns’ SRP-PA series folds shielding directly into the package, an approach the company says allows higher current handling without a corresponding increase in radiated field strength, useful in the densely packed layouts common to modern DC-DC converters.
Across the three families, saturation currents reach up to 9 A, while inductance values range from 0.1 to 3.3 microhenries, depending on the series and part. Physical sizes range from 2 x 1.6 x 1 mm for the SRP2010PA up to 2.5 x 2 x 1.2 mm for the SRP2512PA, giving designers some flexibility to trade footprint against current and heating performance. All three series carry an operating temperature range of -40 to +145 degrees Celsius, consistent with automotive-grade qualification.

The series is also RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, per Bourns’ internal thresholds for bromine and chlorine content, rounding out the environmental compliance profile that automotive suppliers typically require.

Given their compact footprint and shielded, high-current design, these inductors look well suited to automotive power rails, DC-DC converters, and other miniaturized electronics where board space and EMI control are both at a premium, an appealing combination for engineers juggling shrinking layouts against growing power demands.
