Qualcomm Launches Industrial-Grade Processors for Intelligent Edge Solutions

The Dragonwing IQ-X series processors provide “best-in-class” single and multithread performance for industrial PCs, PLCs, HMIs, and edge controllers in demanding industrial conditions.

The ongoing drive toward highly automated and data-intensive manufacturing necessitates a new level of compute power at the factory floor edge. Traditional industrial control platforms are now facing challenges in handling concurrent demands for high-resolution HMI rendering, advanced security management, and localized AI processing.

Addressing this computational gap, Qualcomm has introduced the Dragonwing IQ-X series as a platform engineered for next-generation industrial PCs (IPCs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and edge controllers. This release is notable for bringing the performance of the custom-designed Qualcomm Oryon CPU, built on a leading-edge 4 nm process technology, directly into the realm of industrial embedded systems.

Dragonwing IQ-X Series Processors

The core design philosophy behind the Dragonwing IQ-X series is to deliver best-in-class single and multithread compute efficiency, a prerequisite for running complex, real-time industrial software stacks. The processor’s architecture is flexible, offering scalable configurations with eight to 12 high-performance cores. For users designing industrial systems, this core efficiency translates directly to reduced thermal design power, simplifying passive cooling requirements in rugged, sealed enclosures and enhancing system reliability by mitigating heat stress.

Beyond general-purpose processing, the IQ-X platform is structured to accelerate the adoption of on-device AI. Central to this capability is the integrated neural processing unit (NPU), which delivers a substantial peak AI performance of up to 45 TOPS. This level of integrated intelligence is critical for industrial applications where latency is unacceptable, such as real-time quality control or predictive maintenance. The ability to execute complex AI models directly on the sensor data stream at the edge eliminates the network bandwidth and latency dependencies associated with cloud or central server processing.

Software Support and Development

For ease of development and deployment, the IQ-X series supports the standard industrial software ecosystem. It runs on Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC for a stable, long-term operating environment. Furthermore, the platform explicitly supports industry-essential middleware, including CODESYS for control programming and EtherCAT for deterministic fieldbus communication.

Users can leverage the native AI infrastructure through the Qualcomm AI Software Stack and common machine learning runtimes like ONNX and PyTorch, ensuring that high-performance AI models can be seamlessly ported and utilized without requiring proprietary acceleration hardware.

Industrial-Grade PC Processors

Industrial environments subject electronic components to conditions that far exceed commercial standards. The DragonWing IQ-X series is designed to meet these rigorous requirements, featuring a ruggedized package that can sustain an industrial-grade operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C. This specification is essential for ensuring operational longevity and reliability in applications exposed to significant thermal fluctuations, whether in cold storage or near heavy machinery.

From a mechanical and interface standpoint, the processor simplifies hardware standardization. It supports industry-standard computer-on-module form factors, which enables OEMs to utilize the processor as a direct, drop-in replacement on existing carrier boards. This preserves investments in existing industrial chassis and peripheral interfaces while providing a performance upgrade pathway.

Additionally, the platform’s extensive peripheral support enables straightforward interfacing with various industrial equipment, mitigating the need for complex custom bridge chips and accelerating time-to-market for final products.

Designing Intelligent Edge Systems

Qualcomm’s DragonWing IQ-X series introduces a highly integrated, performance-driven platform for industrial edge computing, distinguishing itself with 4 nm Oryon CPU cores and a powerful 45 TOPS NPU. The platform’s robust design, highlighted by its wide operating temperature range and support for standard industrial COM modules and software stacks, positions it for high-reliability deployments. These technical capabilities are specifically applicable to advanced industrial control systems such as intelligent edge controllers for manufacturing, complex robotics requiring real-time vision and trajectory correction, and advanced factory solutions for predictive maintenance and high-speed defect detection.
