RealSense ID Pro F500 Adds Secure On-Device Facial Authentication

RealSense introduces the ID Pro F500 with local biometric processing, PAD Level 2 anti-spoofing, and 99.77% accuracy for secure access control systems.

RealSense ID Facial Authentication

RealSense ID Pro F500

RealSense recently unveiled the RealSense ID Pro F500, an advanced facial recognition module that can be used for access control, kiosks, and systems that check the identities of individuals. The solution uses depth sensing, vision processing, and local computation to enable secure biometric authentication without needing to use cloud-based processing. It is a very small biometric platform that is ready to use and designed for quick and safe facial recognition in modern access control settings. RealSense is the only facial authentication solution that combines ISO 30107-3 Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) Level 2 certification, 99.77% NIST-verified accuracy for 1:1 verification, and advanced features like person detection and tracking into a single platform that is about the size of a business card. The module combines an active stereo depth system with a neural network pipeline for recognizing faces and stopping spoofing.

The RealSense ID Pro F500 has a separate system-on-chip with a secure element that lets it process and store biometric data in an encrypted way. AES-256 encryption is used by the system, and all biometric processing is done on-site. The hardware has two camera sensors (RGB and IR), an infrared light source that works at 850 nm, and storage built in. USB 2.0 and UART ports provide connectivity, and the device usually uses about 1.5 W of power. The system can work in a range of about 30 to 150 cm and is made to work in a wide range of lighting conditions, from very bright to very dark. The system can enroll and verify people without keeping raw facial images. Biometric templates, on the other hand, are kept in a format that can’t be changed.

Previously, we covered a 3D image sensor back in 2020, along with Infineon’s world’s first ISO 26262-compliant high-resolution 3D image sensor for automotive applications. Feel free to check those out if you’re interested in these sensors.

RealSense offers an open-source SDK for authentication systems that lets you enroll users, manage devices, and update firmware. It has REST APIs that work with Python and Java on Windows, Linux, and Android. The SDK can work on its own without needing the cloud, but it can also be integrated into backend systems that are hosted on-premises or in the cloud. More details available on GitHub.
